Eyre
Hall (circa 1735) |
Project: Eyre Hall is located on the Eastern
Shore. It is one of the most well preserved colonial homes
in Virginia, and it is on the National Register of Historic
Places. McPherson Design Group was hired for emergency stabilization
of a chimney at the main building in 2005. Due to instability
of the soils directly below the chimney, MDG recommended that
helical piles be installed around the chimney. Then steel
beams were utilized to jack the chimney back to its original
position and transferred loads from the chimney to concrete
mats and the Helix piles. Part of the work for this project
included repairs to the brick that is over three hundred years
old.
The land on which it sits has been owned by Eyre descendents
continuously for 12 generations, since Thomas Eyre landed
in Jamestown in 1622 and took over the patented land in
1623. Thomas' great-grandson, Littleton, purchased the present
site of Eyre Hall and built the original portion of the
building in 1735. The property grew periodically over the
years. A dairy in 1760 and a smokehouse was added around
1806.
Solution: During emergency repairs the Advanced
Team installed five Magnum MH-313, 32 kip ultimate piles to
an average depth of 18' below chimney base. The Helix pile
installation was performed in the 275 year old cellar utilizing
hand held equipment and completed in several days. |
